About This Spot

Stepping into Sivalai Thai Restaurant is like finding a tucked-away corner of Thailand in the heart of Portland’s vibrant Southeast neighborhood. The moment you arrive, there’s an inviting warmth in the air — not just from the gentle hum of conversations and clinking utensils, but from the genuine, unhurried hospitality that seems woven into every detail. This is a place where the pace slows just enough to savor the moment, where the atmosphere feels both comfortably familiar and quietly special.

The space strikes a balance between cozy and thoughtfully arranged, with touches that whisper of authentic roots without feeling staged or overly formal. Whether it’s the subtle aroma of lemongrass and coconut wafting from the kitchen or the calm attentiveness of the staff, the mood encourages a relaxed, unpretentious exploration of flavors and textures.

What unfolds on the plate is far from predictable. Here, the classics like pad Thai and spring rolls carry the day, but it’s the thoughtful spins and the fresh balance of ingredients that linger in the memory. The vibrant brightness of a well-speckled mango sticky rice, the tender, fragrant chicken satay dripping with savory-sweet sauce, or a bowl of jungle curry brimming with subtle heat and creamy coconut — each dish feels lovingly prepared, inviting you to slow down and enjoy each bite. Drinks like a subtly sweet Thai iced tea or the refreshing hints of lemon and cucumber in the water complement the food, reinforcing a feeling that you’ve arrived somewhere genuinely cared for.

Beyond the food, it’s the generosity of service that shapes the visit into something quietly memorable. The owners and staff move effortlessly between sharing recommendations and checking in just enough to make you feel truly looked after without rushing. There’s a familial charm here, a sense of being welcomed not just as a customer, but as part of a small, shared discovery.

For those who appreciate authentic, homegrown dining experiences where the flavors tell a story and the smiles feel sincere, Sivalai Thai quietly stands out. It’s a place where the comfort of tradition meets the joy of generosity, making it a local gem worth seeking out again and again.

The warmest and most generous service I’ve ever had the pleasure of receiving, this cozy and well-decorated Thai establishment offers a fantastic menu of familiar favorites in addition to some wonderful specials. Did I mention they had great service? They had great service. The prices were reasonable, the flavors authentic and balanced, and even their water had hints of lemon and cucumber. I could hardly decide what to order they had so many tantalizing specials, and I will definitely be returning to, as they say, “catch ‘em all”. I highly recommend the chicken and shrimp crispy basil. Overall a solid A+ grade, will be back soon.

I can’t recommend this place enough. I love Thai food and have had it all over the country. The quality and taste of the food here were incredible, and the service was absolutely top-notch. We got the Fried Wonton, Chicken Satay, Roast Duck Curry, Siamese Twin, and Mango Sticky Rice and we ate every single bite, it was that flavorful! I wish we lived in Portland, so that we can come here all the time.

The owners here were wonderfully kind and offered great advice for one less familiar with Thai cuisine. They served some of the best pot stickers I've ever had, and their crab fried rice had no shortage of crab. Their sticky mango rice was a great send-off, the whole experience keeping me full for hours to come.

One of my all time favorite restaurant experiences. The owners were so sweet and friendly, and the food was amazing. I forgot to take pictures but the chicken and shrimp with crispy basil and pad thai were delicious and the mango sticky rice was the perfect dessert.

If you’re looking for an authentic mom and pop Thai restaurant, this place is a real find. The food is very affordable and the portion sizes are huge. The staff is incredibly friendly and honestly some of the most inviting people I’ve ever met. They make you feel right at home and are happy to accommodate anything you need. Make sure you try the mango sticky rice. It’s phenomenal and the perfect way to end the meal. I’d definitely recommend this spot to anyone who loves great Thai food and warm hospitality.

Don’t judge a book by its cover; some of the best Thai food my wife and I have had and the service was Michelin star worthy. Will absolutely we coming back.

Stopped by Sivalai after shopping in the Hawthorne area and I didn’t regret it. The gentleman who served me was kind, service was extremely fast, and prices were very reasonable. I ordered the tofu pad see ew and Thai iced tea, and both were amazing. The complementary mango sticky rice was a great touch as well. I definitely recommend and will be back!

Great authentic Thai food! We tried four different dishes and every single one was delicious. Mao, our server, was super attentive and made the experience even better. The food was so good we ended up coming back the very next week for more!
